Biography
Senator James Kaufman
James D. Kaufman is a Republican state senator representing District F in Alaska. He is 66 years old and was born in Neptune, New Jersey. Kaufman relocated to Alaska approximately 13 years ago, settling in Anchorage on the Hillside.
Prior to his legislative career, Kaufman spent over 35 years working in Alaska's oil and gas industry as a resource projects Quality Manager and Team Lead. Throughout his career, he focused on project management, quality improvement, and operational efficiency. He retired from the private sector in 2017 and subsequently became active in community organizations, including South Anchorage Community Councils, the Anchorage HALO organization, and the Coalition of Community Patrols. He has organized community events addressing local challenges such as wildfire prevention and disaster preparedness.
Education
Kaufman is a high school graduate with extensive technical, project, and management training accumulated throughout his career. His professional certifications include SNT-TC-1A Level 2, RT/UT/PT/MT AWS-CWI, and ASQC MQ-OE credentials.
Political Experience
Kaufman's legislative service began in the 32nd Legislature as a State Representative. He was elected to the State Senate in 2023 and continues to serve in that capacity. In the Senate, he has held leadership positions including Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and Vice Chair of the Senate Health & Social Services Committee. He has served on various other committees throughout his tenure.
As a legislator, Kaufman has prioritized fiscal responsibility, government transparency, and accountability. He has championed legislation focused on reducing government costs, improving performance through spending controls, and implementing reformed budgeting processes.
