Biography
James Dwayne Burchett is a Republican representing District 176 in the Georgia House of Representatives, which includes all of Atkinson and Lanier counties and portions of Coffee, Ware, and Lowndes counties. A lifelong South Georgian from Waycross, he was first sworn in on March 18, 2019, following a special election, and won a full term in 2020 by defeating Democrat Evans Primus Jr. Since 2023, he has served as House Majority Whip, a key leadership role in the Republican caucus. Burchett is a small business owner and partner at the law firm Burchett & Kemp LLP, previously serving as Ware County's Chief Building Inspector; he is active in his community as a member of the Waycross Exchange Club, Waycross Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Waycross graduate. He lives on a small farm in Ware County with his wife, Misty , and their two sons, Brodie and Beau; a man of faith and member of Indian Mound Baptist Church, he coaches his sons' sports teams and enjoys hunting and fishing.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, where he played outside linebacker on the football team; Juris Doctorate from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2019 special election; re-elected in 2020; House Majority Whip since 2023; serves on committees including Appropriations, Energy/Utilities & Telecommunications, Ethics, Judiciary Non-Civil, Public and Community Health , Rural Development, State Properties, and Transportation. Recognized as one of the top Republicans in the Georgia House.
