Biography
James Vernon Buchanan is a Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing District 74 in Sarasota County. Born in Michigan on January 10, 1982, he moved to Florida in 1992 and resides in Sarasota as a real estate broker and small business owner since 2009. He is the son of U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, married to Lea Buchanan, and father to three children: Lexington, Caroline, and Jesse James. Elected in 2018 after defeating Linda Yates in the Republican primary and Tony Mowry in the general election , he has been reelected subsequently and is terming out in 2026. Notable positions include Chair of the Agriculture, Conservation & Resiliency Subcommittee, Vice Chair of the Ways & Means Committee, and service on the Infrastructure Strategies, State Affairs, and Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations subcommittees.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: BS in Finance and Entrepreneurship from Florida State University ; MBA in Management, International Business, and Advanced Finance from University of South Florida .
- Political Experience: First elected to the Florida House in 2018 for District 74; previously ran unsuccessfully for two other state House districts. Serves on key committees focused on agriculture, finance, infrastructure, and state affairs.
