Biography

Senator Jake Oliveira is a Democrat representing the Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester District in the Massachusetts State Senate. This district includes twelve communities, such as his hometown of Ludlow, where he is a fourth-generation resident with Portuguese and Polish roots. A strong advocate for public education and libraries, he has secured over $3 million in additional state aid for regional public libraries in recent years and filed legislation to prevent book banning. In 2019, he was recognized as one of Business West's 40 under 40.

Education

A product of public education, Oliveira graduated from Ludlow High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Framingham State University. During college, he served three years on the campus Board of Trustees, was a student member of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, and co-founded PHENOM .

Political Experience

Oliveira's public service spans over two decades, starting as a student representative to the Ludlow School Committee in high school. He served four years on Ludlow Town Meeting , twelve years on the Ludlow School Committee , and in 2016 became the youngest President of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, leading opposition to charter school expansion. Elected to the Massachusetts House for the 7th Hampden District in 2020, he advanced to the State Senate in 2022. Currently, he chairs the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development and vice-chairs the Joint Committee on Election Laws. Professionally, he served as Assistant Executive Officer of the Massachusetts State Universities Council of Presidents, aiding in renaming state colleges to universities.
