Biography
Jake Fitisemanu represents Utah House District 30 in Salt Lake County. He is a public health professional and community advocate who became one of the first Samoan Americans elected to the Utah State Legislature in 2024, defeating Republican Fred Cox with 52.53% of the vote.
Jacob James "Jake" Fitisemanu Jr., born March 27, 1982, in New Zealand/Aotearoa, was raised in Hawaiʻi and Utah as the oldest of eight children to parents Karen Dang of Hawai'i and Jacob Fitisemanu of Samoa. He resides in West Valley City with his wife, Lucia, and their two daughters, holding the Samoan chiefly title "Laufou" from the village of Toamua-Puipa'a. Before entering the legislature, he served two terms on the West Valley City Council , becoming the city's first Pacific Islander councilmember. Notable achievements include his appointment by President Barack Obama to the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders , two terms on the U.S. Census Bureau's National Advisory Committee, and current roles on the University of Utah's Dentistry Advancement Board, The Children's Center Board of Directors, and the National Academy of Medicine's Culture of Health advisory committee.
Education and Political Experience
Fitisemanu holds a Master's of Public Health and a degree in Social Sciences from Westminster University. His professional career spans over 13 years as a community health program manager, leading public health initiatives and managing health clinics focused on youth development, cultural enrichment, and civic engagement. In the Utah House since January 2025, he serves on the House Committee on Health and Human Services, House Committee on Political Subdivisions, and Subcommittee on Social Services Appropriations. First elected in 2024, his next election is in 2026.
