Representative Ismail Mohamed

Representative Ismail Mohamed is a first-generation Somali-American who came to Central Ohio at a young age from Somalia. He is a graduate of Northland High School in Columbus and became the first Somali-American attorney to practice in the State of Ohio. He joined fellow State Representative Munira Abdullahi in the 135th General Assembly as one of the first Somali Americans in the state legislature's history.
Mohamed has served in various capacities in public service, including his appointment to the North-Linden Area Commission and to the Civilian Review Board by Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. In his role on the Civilian Review Board, he used his legal expertise as a criminal lawyer to create oversight mechanisms regarding law enforcement's use of force and establish more transparent investigation processes.
Education
Mohamed earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from The Ohio State University . He subsequently obtained his Juris Doctor from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law .
Political Experience and Positions
As a State Representative, Mohamed serves on the House Committee on Constitutional Resolutions, where he holds the position of Ranking Democratic Member. His legislative priorities include small business development, affordable housing, public safety, and education.
Beyond his legislative role, Mohamed maintains a private legal practice specializing in personal injury, immigration, and criminal law. He also provides pro-bono legal assistance to indigent clients with issues including expungements, evictions, and benefit applications.
