Biography
Assemblymember Isaac Bryan
Isaac Gregory Bryan was born on January 16, 1992, and is a Democrat serving in the California State Assembly representing the 55th District. His district encompasses Baldwin Hills, the Crenshaw District, Culver City, Ladera Heights, Mar Vista, Del Rey, Palms, Pico-Robertson, Beverly Grove, Mid-Wilshire, and large parts of South Los Angeles.
Bryan is one of nine adopted children in a loving blended family that fostered hundreds of children over two decades. His career has been focused on addressing racial inequalities and advancing social justice in California.
Education and Early Career
Bryan holds bachelor's degrees from the University of Arizona and a master's degree from UCLA. Before his election to the Assembly in 2021, he served as the founding Director of the UCLA Black Policy Project, a think tank dedicated to advancing racial equity through rigorous policy analysis. He also worked as the Director of Public Policy for the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center and served as an advisor to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Political Experience and Achievements
Bryan was elected to the Assembly in 2021 and quickly rose through leadership ranks. From July to November 2023, he served as Assembly Majority Leader, a significant position within the state legislature.
In his legislative role, Bryan currently serves as Chair of the Committee on Natural Resources and Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color. He is also a member of the Governmental Organization, Judiciary, and Privacy and Consumer Protection committees.
His major legislative accomplishments include:
- Establishing the Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy at UCLA School of Law
- Creating the first Climate Change Education Center in the California Community College system at West LA College
- Establishing a stipend program for previously incarcerated students to earn a living wage while attending community college
- Phasing out the Inglewood Oil Field and establishing a community repair fund
- Ending prison gerrymandering
- Eliminating punishing fees for parents with children in foster care
- Ensuring access to menstrual products for incarcerated Californians
- Protecting survivor benefits owed to foster youth
- Establishing a registry for people living with ALS
Bryan is also a member of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus and was elected Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus in 2024.
