Biography
Hubert Vo is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 149 in Harris County, which includes most of Alief, parts of southwest Houston, west Houston, and Katy. Born on May 30, 1956, he is the first and only Vietnamese American elected to the Texas Legislature. At age 19, he fled Vietnam with his family in 1975 after the fall to communists, settling in Houston's Alief community. A successful businessman, real estate developer, and entrepreneur, Vo is multilingual, speaking Spanish, Vietnamese, French, and English. He has served continuously since his 2004 election, defeating longtime Republican incumbent Talmadge Heflin by a narrow 20,695 to 20,662 votes. Notable achievements include advocacy for education, health care, public safety, and economic development, with a focus on bipartisan collaboration and workforce development.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston in 1983, while working nights as a machinist at Hughes Tool Company .
- Political Experience: Elected to Texas House District 149 in 2004 and reelected multiple times through 2024. Currently serves as Vice Chair of the Pensions, Investments and Financial Services Committee and member of the Insurance and Resolutions Committees. Previously held roles as Vice Chair of the Insurance Committee, Vice Chair of the Economic and Small Business Development Committee, and member of committees including Public Safety, House Administration, and Subcommittee on Small Business. Active in community roles such as Alief Super Neighborhood Council member and various Democratic and business associations.
