Herman C. Quirmbach is a Democratic state senator representing Iowa Senate District 25, which includes almost all of the city of Ames and Grant Township in Story County. Born on October 6, 1950, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was raised in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, and Brookfield, Wisconsin, and now resides in Ames. He was elected in 2022 to his sixth term in the Iowa Senate. A retired associate professor of economics at Iowa State University, Quirmbach serves on key committees including Agriculture, Education , Judiciary, Local Government, and Ways & Means. He also represents the Senate on the College Student Aid Commission, Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Commission, Iowa Comprehensive Health Insurance Association Board, and School Finance Formula Review Committee. Notable achievements include receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the Achieving Maximum Potential Foster Care Youth Council in 2019, and prior service as Ames Mayor Pro Tem in 2002.

Education and Political Experience

Education: Graduated from Central High School in Brookfield, Wisconsin; B.A. in government with honors from Harvard University; M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.

Political Experience: Served on the Ames City Council for the 4th Ward from 1995 to 2003 and as Ames Mayor Pro Tem in 2002. Treasurer of the Story County Democratic Central Committee. Additional roles include boards for the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, Story County REAP Committee, and Ames Utility Retirement Board; co-chair of the Ames Veterans Memorial Committee; and memberships in organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of Ames, League of Women Voters of Ames & Story County, and Ames Patriotic Council .
