Biography
Henry Stern is a Democratic State Senator representing California's 27th Senate District, which spans parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including areas from the San Fernando Valley and Conejo Valley to Simi Valley and Sherman Oaks. Born on April 12, 1982, in Malibu, he is a sixth-generation Californian, the son of actor Daniel Stern, and the first millennial elected to the California State Senate in 2016. A dedicated environmental champion, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife Alexandra and two children. Notable achievements include authoring landmark climate laws like SB 261 and SB 253 for corporate greenhouse gas disclosures, the Wildfire Resilience through Community and Ecology Act after the 2018 Woolsey fire destroyed his home, and SB 1477 for clean heating incentives; he chaired the Senate Natural Resources & Water Committee and now chairs the Governor’s Holocaust and Genocide Education Council. He has earned awards from the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, and others for his 100% voting record on environmental justice, reproductive rights, and equity issues.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended public K-12 schools in California; earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University ; obtained a law degree from UC Berkeley; served as a law lecturer at UCLA and UC Berkeley.
- Political Experience: Before election, worked as an environmental attorney, senior advisor to Sen. Fran Pavley, and climate counsel for Rep. Henry Waxman; built renewable energy projects and aided post-Katrina civil rights efforts. Elected in November 2016 to succeed Pavley, defeating Republican Steve Fazio on a platform emphasizing clean energy, small businesses, education funding, and safer communities; served as Sacramento Delegation Speaker in 2020.
