Representative Hamilton Grant
Hamilton Richburg Grant is a Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 79 in Richland County, which includes Columbia. Born on December 21, 1988, he is a longtime Columbia resident and has dedicated his career to public service and community development. Grant is a husband and father who has worked as a business consultant, bringing expertise in financial strategy and organizational leadership to his professional background.
Education
Grant earned his bachelor's degree from South Carolina State University in 2011 and later completed a graduate degree at Alabama A&M University in 2014.
Political Experience
Grant launched his bid for the House District 79 seat in February 2024 after incumbent Ivory Torrey Thigpen announced plans to run for the South Carolina Senate seat. He won the Democratic primary against community activist Jonneika Farr and subsequently defeated Republican nominee Rebecca Madsen in the general election. He assumed office on November 11, 2024.
As a legislator, Grant champions policies focused on education reform, economic development, and healthcare accessibility. His legislative priorities include workforce housing initiatives and making the SC Housing Bond Mortgage Program more accessible. He has also sponsored resolutions recognizing cultural contributions within his community, including a resolution honoring musician 803Fresh for his song "Boots on the Ground" and proclaiming May 6, 2025, as "Boots On The Ground Day."
