Biography
Gregory W. Porter is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives, representing District 96 in Central Indiana, including portions of Marion County in Indianapolis. Born on May 14, 1955, in Indianapolis, he has served since 1992, currently in his 17th term, and is a member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus. He is married to Yvette Porter and has three children: Dewayne, Amann, and Carmen.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: BA from Earlham College ; graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Program at Harvard University .
- Political Experience: Ranking minority member of the House Ways and Means Committee and State Budget Committee; serves on Public Health, Insurance, and other committees. Former chair of the Indiana House Education Committee and Indiana Black Legislative Caucus; past president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. Previously vice president of Community Planning/External Affairs at the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County.
Notable Achievements and Positions
Porter is a leading advocate for fiscal policy, affordability, public schools, affordable health care, public safety, seniors, and children. Key legislation includes bullying prevention in K-12 schools, property tax relief for seniors, lower prescription drug costs, and support for Hoosiers with Alzheimer’s and dementia. He co-authored Resolution No. 56, renaming a stretch of I-65 the “Tuskegee Airmen Highway.” He holds leadership roles on boards such as the Near Eastside Federal Credit Union, Indiana Advocates for Children, Indianapolis Urban League, and NAACP.
