Biography
Greg VanWoerkom is a Republican representing Michigan's 88th House District, which includes parts of Muskegon and Ottawa counties, such as the cities of Montague, Norton Shores, Roosevelt Park, and Whitehall, along with several townships. Born on July 24, 1980, he resides in Norton Shores, is married to Wendy, and has three children: Noah, Rowan, and Ewan. A member of Covenant Life Church, he has served in the Michigan House of Representatives since 2019, first elected to the 91st District in 2018, reelected in 2020, and then to the 88th District following redistricting in 2022 and 2024, with his current term starting January 2, 2025.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Political Science/Public Administration from Calvin College ; Master's degree in Political Leadership from George Washington University .
- Political Experience: Prior to the House, served as district director for U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga and senior policy advisor to U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra. Currently, Republican Vice Chair of the House Tax Policy Committee and Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity; Chair of Appropriations Subcommittee on Medicaid and Behavioral Health; Vice Chair of Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government; member of Economic Development and Small Business, Health Policy, and other committees.
Notable Achievements and Positions
VanWoerkom contributed to multiple state budgets, including those addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, and chaired the Appropriations Subcommittee on Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2020. He championed the MI Tri-Share childcare program and initiatives to improve childcare access. Community roles include board member of United Way of the Lakeshore, past School Board President of Western Michigan Christian High and Middle School, and member of Muskegon Rotary Club. In 2021, he proposed legislation to restrict the Secretary of State from mailing ballot applications to prevent public confusion.
