Biography

Gordon M. Johnson is a Democratic politician representing New Jersey's 37th Legislative District in the State Senate, where he has served since 2021. Born on December 16, 1949, and raised in Englewood, New Jersey, he is the first African American to represent the district in the Senate. A retired Englewood Police Patrol Sergeant with 24 years of service, he also served as Undersheriff and Sheriff of Bergen County, President of the State P.B.A. Supervisory Officers Association-Local #216, and Major in the U.S. Army Reserves , earning decorations including the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Majority Leader in the Senate since 2022. Notable achievements include sponsoring laws to expand DNA evidence use, improve the Crime Victim's Bill of Rights, enhance education access for students, veterans, and DREAMers, oversee surplus military equipment for police, mandate sexual assault training for officers, reduce gun violence, and support the film industry via the Garden State Film and Digital Media Jobs Act. He has received awards such as Legislator of the Year from the ARC of New Jersey and honors from the NJ Library Association and Englewood Rotary Club.
