Biography
Gina Hinojosa is a Democratic Texas State Representative for District 49 , known for advocating public education funding, healthcare access, and anti-corruption efforts.
Gina Hinojosa, a native Texan born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley , is the daughter of legal aid lawyers. She began her career as a civil rights and union lawyer, representing workers for fair wages and benefits, and notably served on the 2005 legal team suing House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on money laundering charges. Motivated by threats to her son's public school, she entered politics by winning election to the Austin ISD School Board , where she was appointed president . Under her leadership, the district increased teacher pay, balanced its budget, met statewide accountability standards for all high schools, and kept every school open. Elected to the Texas House in 2016 , she has championed public schools, sponsoring key bills like HB 3 , HB 3488 , and SB 1350 . She led efforts to defeat school vouchers in the 88th Session and created the Texas Climate Plan. Hinojosa resides in Austin with her husband , two sons , and dog Baffi. Awards include Freshman of the Year and Defender of Justice .
