Biography

Gilda Cobb-Hunter is a Democratic representative for South Carolina House District 95 , recognized as the longest-serving member of the South Carolina House of Representatives since her first election in 1992.

Born on November 5, 1952, in Gifford, Florida, Gilda Cobb-Hunter became the first African American woman elected to the South Carolina House from Orangeburg County. She previously represented District 66 before redistricting in 2022 shifted her to District 95. Notable achievements include serving as the first person of color elected House Minority Leader , first freshman appointed to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee , and leading the effort as Vice-Chair of the African American History Monument Commission to erect the first monument to African Americans on any state capitol grounds. She is widely respected across party lines as "the conscience of the House," former president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, and a long-time Democratic National Committeewoman, including as the first woman of color to chair its Southern Regional Caucus. Cobb-Hunter is CEO of CASA Family Systems, a family violence agency, and a licensed master social worker.
