Biography

Gerry Pollet is a Democratic member of the Washington House of Representatives, representing the 46th Legislative District in northeast Seattle. A public interest lawyer and environmental advocate, he was appointed to the House in December 2011 following a vacancy and has served continuously since. Prior to his appointment, he founded and directed Heart of America Northwest, overseeing cleanup efforts at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and chaired a key U.S. Department of Energy advisory committee, saving taxpayers hundreds of millions through contract reforms.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from the University of Washington Law School; faculty member at the University of Washington School of Public Health, teaching public health policy and environmental health; adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law; faculty at Western Washington University's College of the Environment; offers a Tribal Environmental Law externship.
  • Political Experience: Serves on the House Appropriations, Education, and Postsecondary Education and Workforce Committees; chairs the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee. Co-authored the Growth Management Act and Model Toxics Control Act; as chair of the House Local Government Committee, passed legislation enabling Tribal participation in planning processes.

Notable Achievements and Positions

  • Authored first-in-the-nation laws including protections against lead in school water and cookware, cost-free emergency contraception for college students post-Roe, opioid reversal nasal spray for students, and ending "Pass the Harasser" practices in higher education.
  • Championed Washington College Grant, teacher student loan forgiveness, Washington Promise , and dyslexia screening for young students.
  • Board member, Washington Coalition for Open Government; advocates for open government, special education funding, Hanford worker protections, and science-based COVID response.
  • Holds weekly "Traveling Town Halls" with constituents; lives in NE Seattle with spouse Janet Miller.
