Biography
Representative Garland E. Pierce
Garland E. Pierce is a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 48, which encompasses Hoke and Scotland counties in the southeastern part of the state. A Baptist minister and U.S. Army veteran, Pierce has been a prominent voice in state politics for over two decades. He is notably the only Democrat representing any county in the 200-mile stretch between Charlotte and Wilmington along North Carolina's southern border.
Education
Pierce earned a Bachelor of Science from Fayetteville State University and a Master of Divinity from Shaw Divinity School. He currently serves as the Pastor of Bright Hopewell Baptist Church.
Military and Professional Background
Pierce served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974 before pursuing his career in ministry and public service. Prior to his current role, he was employed by United Parcel Service , from which he has since retired.
Political Experience
Pierce has served in the North Carolina House of Representatives since 2005, making him one of the longest-serving members in the state legislature. Throughout his tenure, he has held several leadership positions, including serving as Democratic Conference Chair in 2016 and Minority Whip from 2017 to 2021.
He currently serves on numerous key committees, including Appropriations, Commerce , Health, Homeland Security/Military and Veterans Affairs, and Legislative Ethics, among others. His legislative priorities focus on economic development, education, public schools, veterans' affairs, and increasing economic opportunities for working families. Pierce is also known for addressing regional issues such as job creation, housing development, and support for his constituents in Hoke and Scotland counties.
