Biography
Garlan Gudger - Alabama State Senator
Garlan Edward Gudger Jr. was born on April 12, 1975, and is a Republican member of the Alabama State Senate representing District 4, which includes Cullman, Marion, and Winston counties. He assumed office on November 7, 2018, and was re-elected in 2022.
Gudger is a successful small business owner and second-generation owner of Southern Accents Architectural Antiques, established in 1969. Under his ownership since 1999, the company has grown into one of the top five architectural salvage companies in the nation and was awarded "Best Antique Store in Alabama" by Alabama magazine in 2014, 2015, and 2016. He also serves as an architectural salvage appraiser and sits on the Landmark Committee for the Alabama Historical Commission.
Before entering the state legislature, Gudger had an extensive career in local government. In 2004, he became the youngest person elected to the Cullman City Council at that time and served for 14 years, eventually becoming council president for the final decade. During his tenure on the council, he helped create a façade improvement program and streetscape projects that revitalized downtown Cullman following the 2011 tornadoes.
In December 2024, the Alabama Republican Senate Caucus elected Gudger as Senate President Pro Tempore, one of the most influential leadership positions in the Alabama Senate.
Education
Gudger is a graduate of Cullman High School and received a football scholarship to Samford University, where he played receiver. He went on to graduate from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Building Science and a minor in Business. He was also selected for the prestigious Preservation Institute of Nantucket through the University of Florida.
Political Experience
During his tenure in the state senate, Gudger has championed legislation focused on small business protection, education support, and tax credits for single parents. His first term saw him rise to Chair of the Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development Committee, a position he continues to hold. Notable legislative efforts include working to keep churches and businesses open during federal COVID-19 lockdowns. He is also a major supporter of Alabama's abortion ban and serves as a member of the Small Business Commission. His committee assignments have included Finance and Taxation Education, Confirmations, Tourism, Education Policy, County and Municipal Government, and Healthcare.
