Biography
Gabriella Romero
Gabriella A. Romero is a Democrat and Working Families Party member serving as the Assemblymember for New York State's 109th Assembly District, which represents the communities of Albany, New Scotland, and parts of Guilderland. She is the first Latina to represent an upstate New York district in the Assembly and identifies as a progressive.
Romero grew up as the daughter of two unionized state workers, which instilled in her a deep appreciation for public service and the power of collective action. Before entering elected office, she worked as a felony trial attorney in the Albany County Public Defender's office, where she handled cases to verdict and extensive mitigation files. This experience deepened her understanding of systemic criminalization and inspired her commitment to criminal justice reform and addressing root causes of poverty, housing insecurity, and food insecurity.
Education
Romero earned her undergraduate degree from Union College, where she was selected as a Minerva Fellow for post-graduation service in Estero de Plátano, Ecuador. She later graduated from Albany Law School, where she distinguished herself as Editor-in-Chief of the Government Law Review and as a Pro Bono Scholar.
Political Experience
Romero's career in public service began in 2021 when she was elected to the Albany Common Council representing the 6th Ward. During her tenure, she championed tenant rights and criminal justice reform while increasing youth recreational opportunities.
In 2024, Romero won a crowded Democratic primary to represent the 109th Assembly district seat and prevailed in the general election. Her campaign platform emphasized free healthcare, better access to healthcare, affordable housing through zoning reform and construction subsidies, and greater state investment in Albany. Since taking office, she has advocated for addressing state budget deficits, particularly regarding the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and has introduced legislation on gender-affirming care programs. She is also a vocal supporter of New York's medical aid in dying law and has called for legislation to prevent deaths in correctional facilities.
