Biography
Gabe Okoye is a Democratic representative for Georgia House District 102, which covers the city of Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County. A Nigerian immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 1981, he has lived in Lawrenceville since 1992, raising his family there. As a professional civil engineer and founder of Essex Geoscience, Inc., Okoye serves concurrently as Gwinnett County Commissioner of Planning. Elected in 2022 and taking office on January 9, 2023, he focuses on community growth, environmental sustainability, voting rights, economic opportunities, women's rights, public school funding, healthcare access, and infrastructure.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Studied civil engineering after starting as a security guard upon immigrating from Enugu-Agidi, Nigeria.
- Professional Experience: President and CEO of Essex Geoscience, Inc.; served on the Gwinnett County Planning Commission; past Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization in the Americas.
- Political Experience: Former Chairman of the Gwinnett County Democratic Party , leading to Democratic gains in 2018 elections ; honored with "Gabe Okoye Leadership Day" by the Georgia House on November 6, 2019; lifelong Democrat and first Nigerian immigrant in the Georgia State House.
