Biography
Fred Meyer - Nebraska State Senator
Fred Meyer is an American politician serving as a member of the Nebraska Legislature representing District 41. Born on October 27, 1951, in West Point, Nebraska, Meyer was raised near West Point and currently operates a farm near St. Paul. He is married to Kay Christensen and has three sons: Chris, Jon, and Jordan, along with seven grandchildren.
Meyer was appointed to the District 41 seat for the second time by Governor Jim Pillen in January 2026 following the resignation of Senator Dan McKeon. He previously held the seat from November 2023 to January 2025, when he was initially appointed after Senator Tom Briese resigned to become Nebraska State Treasurer. During his first appointment, Meyer announced he did not intend to run for election in 2025.
Education
Meyer graduated from West Point High School in 1970 and earned degrees in animal science and agriculture education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1974.
Political Experience
Before his legislative service, Meyer had extensive involvement in Nebraska education policy. He served on the Nebraska State Board of Education from 1999 to 2010 after being appointed by Governor Mike Johanns, where he held both the vice president and president positions.
Currently, Meyer serves on three legislative committees: Agriculture; Business and Labor; and Government, Military and Veterans Affairs.
Meyer's professional background includes experience as a farmer, rancher, teacher, and banker. He holds numerous memberships in agricultural and community organizations and has received recognition including the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement and the Elaine Stuhr Leadership and Advocacy Award from the Nebraska Excellence in Career Education program.
