Biography
Floyd L. Griffin Jr., a Democrat, represents Georgia House District 149, which includes portions of Baldwin, Jones, Bibb, Bleckley, Dodge, Jeff Davis, Laurens, Telfair, Twiggs, Wheeler, and Wilkinson counties. Born on May 24, 1944, he is a retired U.S. Army colonel and former helicopter pilot who has made history as the first African American elected to the Georgia State Senate from a rural, majority-white district in 1994, the first African American mayor of Milledgeville , and the first African American representative for District 149 since assuming office in January 2025 after defeating incumbent Kenneth Vance in the 2024 election. Notable achievements include barrier-breaking elections, bids for Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State , and authoring the autobiography Legacy to Legend: Winners: Make it Happen . He focuses on women's reproductive rights, healthcare, veterans and senior care, voting rights, and democracy.
