Biography
Erik Martin Dilan is a Democratic Assembly Member representing District 54 in the New York State Assembly, covering Brooklyn neighborhoods including Bushwick, Cypress Hills, East New York, Bedford Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill, and Brownsville. Born on May 11, 1974, in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to former New York State Senator Martin Malave-Dilan and Debra Dilan, he is of Puerto Rican and African American descent and a lifelong North Brooklyn resident. He currently resides in Cypress Hills with his wife Jannitza and children Daniel, Lea, and Matthew. Notable achievements include enacting legislation protecting people with disabilities from discrimination related to support animals, advocating for prison reform and safety, and serving as Chair of the Correction Committee while also sitting on the Energy, Insurance, and Ways & Means committees. He is a member of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus and the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from New York City public schools including P.S. 151, Philippa Schuyler Middle School, and Norman Thomas High School; earned an Associate of Science in business administration from St. John’s University.
- Political Experience: Served 12 years on the New York City Council for the 37th District, where he chaired the Housing & Building Committee and Brooklyn Delegation, and participated in budget negotiations. Elected to the New York State Assembly in 2015, where he continues to serve District 54, focusing on tenant rights, childcare, healthcare, and criminal justice reform.
