Biography

Eric Morrison

Eric Morrison is an American politician serving as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives representing the 27th district, which includes the Newark and Bear areas. He assumed office in November 2020 and is a member of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Morrison was born in Salisbury, Maryland and raised in Bridgeville, Delaware. He is the first openly gay man elected to serve in the Delaware General Assembly. He was one of three LGBT candidates elected to the Delaware General Assembly in 2020, joining Marie Pinkney and Sarah McBride.

Since his election, Morrison has been deeply involved in community advocacy and legislative work. He has held long-term leadership positions in community organizations including Delaware Pride and Delaware United, and has volunteered extensively with AIDS Delaware, the Rainbow Chorale of Delaware, Faithful Friends, and the Food Bank of Delaware for over 17 years.

Education

Morrison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in history from the University of Delaware in 1996. He graduated from the University of Delaware Honors Program with a concentration in Ethnic and Cultural Studies and an Advanced Honors Certificate.

Political Experience

Before his election to the House, Morrison worked as an activist and organizer, participating extensively in local and state politics for several years. He helped pass important legislation, organized and moderated various forums on political and social issues, and held leadership roles in campaigns for progressive Democratic candidates at local, statewide, and federal levels.

Morrison defeated incumbent conservative Democrat Earl Jaques Jr. in the 2020 primary with a 61%-39% margin. Prior to his political career, he worked for six years as a full-time educator and many additional years as a part-time educator. He spent 13 years working in Medicaid, Medicare, and other health programs for Delawareans, and helped implement Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage in the state. He currently works as a technical writer.
