Emily K. Shetty is a progressive Democrat representing District 18 in Montgomery County in the Maryland House of Delegates, first elected in 2018 and serving since January 9, 2019. Born in Fairfax, Virginia, to immigrant parents and raised by a single mother who was a small business owner, she began community service at age nine, earning the United Way’s Community Hero Award in 2001 for work with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and others. She has passed 19 bills into law, chairs the Health and Social Services Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, serves on the Capital Budget Subcommittee, and was elected Chair of the House Democratic Caucus . Previously Deputy Majority Whip and Vice-Chair of the Montgomery County House Delegation , she holds awards including the Every Life Foundation Rare Voice Award and Leading Women Award from The Daily Record . Married with one child.
