Biography
Eliana Pintor Marin is a Democratic member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing District 29, which includes parts of Newark and Belleville. Born on October 23, 1980, in Newark to Portuguese immigrant parents, she grew up in the city's historic East Ward as the youngest child of factory workers. She has served in the Assembly since 2013, when she was sworn in to replace a resigned member, and has been re-elected multiple times, including to her fourth term. As a key leader, she chairs the Assembly Budget Committee, oversees the state's approximately $37 billion budget discussions with the Governor, and serves on the Appropriations and Joint Budget Oversight committees. Notable achievements include sponsoring laws for equal pay for women, restoring funding for family planning centers, blocking forced child marriages, protecting utilities for customers with life-saving equipment, addressing campus sexual assault, rental protections, teacher training on students with disabilities, financial literacy education, and expanded summer meals for children. She is also active in the Portuguese community as a member of the Newark Portuguese Sports Club and director of the Luís de Camões Portuguese School.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Academy of St. Benedict’s for grammar school; graduated from Mother Seton Regional High School; earned a Bachelor of Science in legal studies and a Master of Arts in government and politics from St. John’s University in New York.
- Political Experience: Worked for a Brazilian investment bank in New York City and the Essex County Clerk's Office in Newark. Served on the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board from 2008 to 2014, including as chair and financial chair for three years; received the Star of Essex award for community contributions. Elected to the New Jersey Assembly in 2013 for District 29 .
