Biography
Edward L. "Eddie" Gibbs, a Democrat, represents New York's 68th Assembly District, encompassing East Harlem , Randall's Island, parts of the Upper East Side, and Central Harlem. Born on October 28, 1968, and raised in East Harlem amid financial hardship, Gibbs turned his life around after incarceration at age 17, becoming the first formerly incarcerated member of the New York State Legislature and only the second in any U.S. state legislature. As a community organizer for over two decades, he has organized annual coat drives, Thanksgiving dinners, toy giveaways, back-to-school supplies, and COVID-19 aid including food, PPE, and vaccine assistance; he also aided Flint's water crisis and protested police brutality and Occupy Wall Street. Notable recent achievements include passing A10079-A on March 4, 2026, amending Education Law to support ESL services.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Associate Degree in business administration from Cayuga Community College.
- Political Experience: Elected to the New York State Assembly in 2022, serving District 68; prior community activism includes arrests protesting Trump's Supreme Court nomination with the National Action Network.
