Biography

Edward John Markey, born on July 11, 1946, in Malden, Massachusetts, is a Democratic politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts since 2013. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Markey represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 2013. Throughout his career, he has been a staunch advocate for environmental protection, consumer rights, and energy policy reform. Notably, he co-authored the Waxman-Markey bill, the only comprehensive climate legislation to pass a chamber of Congress, and was the principal House author of the 2007 fuel economy law, which aimed to increase fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
