Biography
Ed Harbison
Ed Harbison is a Democratic state senator from Columbus, Georgia, representing Senate District 15. He was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 1992 and has represented the citizens of Macon, Marion, Talbot, Taylor, and Schley counties, as well as portions of Chattahoochee County and Muscogee County.
Political Experience
Senator Harbison has held several significant leadership positions within the Georgia General Assembly. He currently serves as Chairman of the State Institutions and Property Committee. Additionally, he holds ranking member positions on the Banking and Financial Institutions, Insurance and Labor, Interstate Cooperation, Reapportionment and Redistricting, and Ethics committees. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security committee and holds an Ex-Officio position on the Regulated Industries and Utilities committee.
Prior to his election to the Senate, Harbison served as second vice-president of the Muscogee County School Board and held a position in the Legislative Branch of the Civil Air Patrol.
Notable Achievements
Senator Harbison has sponsored significant legislation throughout his tenure, including:
- A 2008 bill to ease barriers for military families' children transferring between states
- Legislation designating Georgia as a Purple Heart State
- Establishment of a separate court for veterans in Georgia
- Creation of the Military Hall of Fame in Georgia
- A bill authorizing the consolidation of Chattahoochee County and Cusseta
He has received numerous honors, including recognition from Alpha Kappa Alpha for his support of the Heritage Program, a citation from the NAACP for a 1989 Radio-Thon, the Alabama Disabled American Veterans Certificate of Appreciation, and the U.S. Marine Corps Appreciation Award.
