Biography
Earl A. Read III is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 26 . Born in November 1971, he is a lifelong Rhode Islander who has lived in Coventry for 26 years with his wife, Amy Read, where they raised their family. Elected in November 2024, he assumed office on January 7, 2025, with his current term ending January 5, 2027.
Notable achievements include sponsoring legislation in his first 2025 session to overhaul the Public Records Administration Act, establishing procedures for public records retention and transfer to state archives; a law allowing public school teachers to hold a brief moment of silence for the September 11, 2001 attacks; and a resolution creating a special House commission to study Pawtuxet River flooding. He serves on the House Education Committee and House Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Cranston High School West in 1989; bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1996; master's degree in criminal justice studies from Roger Williams University in 2004.
- Professional Experience: Served 23 years with the Warwick Police Department, retiring as detective lieutenant in 2018; currently a criminal justice instructor at the Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School.
- Prior Civic Roles: Member of the Coventry Juvenile Hearing Board and Rhode Island Department of Education's Career and Technical Standards Committee.
