Biography

Doug Smith - New York State Assemblyman

Douglas M. Smith was born on August 5, 1990, and is a Republican legislator currently serving as the New York State Assemblyman for the 5th district, a position he has held since April 30, 2018. His district spans the townships of Brookhaven and Islip in Suffolk County, including the communities of Holbrook, Holtsville, Ronkonkoma, Lake Ronkonkoma, Lake Grove, Centereach, Selden, and Farmingville, as well as parts of North Patchogue, Islandia, and Stony Brook.

Smith is a lifelong resident of Long Island and a small business owner who operates a website design and hosting company. He is actively involved in his community, serving as a member of the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce and the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce. He is also affiliated with the Centereach and Ronkonkoma Civic Associations and the Sachem Alumni Association. Smith is married to Elizabeth and has a child named Sophie.

Education

Smith graduated from Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonkoma and earned degrees in Mathematics and Adolescent Education from St. Joseph's University in Patchogue. He is a New York State certified Mathematics teacher for grades 7-12. During his college years, he worked as an aide at the Social Security Administration and spent evenings teaching adult education courses while volunteering on weekends to educate homeless and underprivileged youth in the Sachem School District.

Political Experience

Before his election to the Assembly, Smith served for seven years as Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Al Graf, during which time he resolved over 2,000 constituent cases. As Assemblyman, Smith has been recognized for leading efforts against the Common Core curriculum, advocating for families dealing with the heroin epidemic, and championing changes to protect victims of domestic violence.

Currently, Smith serves on several committees including the Committee on Education, Committee on Higher Education, Committee on Aging, Committee on Energy, and Committee on Housing. He also serves as a member of the Commission on Future of the Long Island Power Authority and is a co-chairman of the Assembly Minority Task Force on School Safety & Security.
