Biography

Doug Mastriano is a Republican state senator representing Pennsylvania's 33rd District, which includes all of Adams County, most of Franklin County, and parts of Cumberland and York Counties. Born on January 2, 1964, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he is a retired U.S. Army colonel and combat veteran who served 30 years on active duty from 1986 to 2017. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in a special election on May 21, 2019, defeating Democrat Sarah Hammond with 70% of the vote, and was sworn in on June 10, 2019. Notable positions include Chair of the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, Vice Chair of the Education Committee, and memberships on committees such as Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Game and Fisheries, Intergovernmental Operations, and State Government. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in Pennsylvania's 13th District in 2018 and for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2022.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Holds a PhD in History; four master's degrees in Strategy, Strategic Intelligence, Military Operations, and Airpower ; and a BA in History from Eastern University .
  • Military Experience: Commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1986; served on the Iron Curtain in West Germany with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, witnessing the Cold War's end; deployed to Iraq for Operation Desert Storm ; lead planner for Iraq invasion via Turkey post-9/11; served four years with NATO, deployed three times to Afghanistan as Director of NATO's Joint Intelligence Center ; led seven relief operations for Afghan orphans; retired as Colonel after teaching as Professor at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA.
  • Early Life and Other: Eagle Scout; held jobs including paperboy, janitor, security guard, short-order cook, pizza delivery person, and dishwasher; son of a career U.S. Navy man; married to Rebecca , whose ancestors settled in Pennsylvania in 1732; active church member residing near Caledonia State Park, Pennsylvania.
