Biography

Doug Bishop is a Democratic representative for Chittenden-20 in the Vermont House of Representatives, serving since 2025. Born in New Jersey, he moved to Vermont in 1984 to attend the University of Vermont, where he fell in love with the state and became a member of the Vermont 251 Club by visiting all 251 towns. He worked on Senator Patrick Leahy's Washington, D.C. staff, practiced law in Vermont for 12 years, and held leadership roles in nonprofits including five years at the American Red Cross and nine years at the Greater Burlington YMCA . As Vice Chair of the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund, he oversaw distribution of $4 million in aid after Tropical Storm Irene. Bishop has volunteered with United Way of Northwest Vermont, Boys & Girls Club of Burlington , Rotary , and currently the Colchester Community Food Shelf. He serves on the House Committee on Human Services, Canvassing Committee, Recreational Facilities Grant Advisory Committee, and Oversight Commission on Children, Youths, and Families; he is also a member of the Vermont Rural Caucus, Vermont National Guard & Veterans Affairs Legislative Caucus, Older Vermonters Caucus, and Caucus for Vermont's Economy. Married to Beth Bloomberg, they have one adult son, Ian.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: BA in Political Science and History from University of Vermont; Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center; Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Champlain College/Marlboro College.
  • Political Experience: Staff for U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy; testified before Vermont legislative committees as an attorney; elected to Vermont House in 2025 representing Chittenden-20 .
