Biography
Donzella James is a Democratic member of the Georgia State Senate representing District 28, which includes portions of Cobb, Douglas, and south Fulton counties. First elected to the Senate in 1995, she served until 2002, ran for Congress, and returned in a 2009 special election; as of 2025, she continues in District 28. Notable achievements include chairing the Senate Committee on Urban Affairs and serving as vice chair of the Senate Committee on Interstate Cooperation, while also sitting on Appropriations, Economic Development and Tourism, and Education and Youth committees. She sponsored or co-sponsored hundreds of bills, including Senate Bill 1 for autism insurance coverage up to $30,000 annually for children ages 6 and under, and House Bill 89 for drug-free commercial zones; she also led Senate Resolution 9 to strengthen Georgia-Africa ties.
Education and Political Experience
- Earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and political science from Morris Brown College; received honorary doctorates from Emmanuel Bible College and Bible Of Christ Bible College and Seminary in Nigeria.
