He became a permanent resident of the United States in 1995 after completing his studies and military service, and achieved his goal of becoming a U.S. citizen in 2002. He is married to Karen and has a six-year-old son named Cameron.

McFarlane holds a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering. He has received specialized training in information security, risk management, and incident and emergency management.
