Biography
Don Harmon is a Democratic politician representing the 39th Senate District in Illinois, which includes Oak Park, parts of Chicago, and suburbs like Addison, Bensenville, and Franklin Park. First elected to the Illinois Senate in 2002, he has served since 2003 and was elected President of the Illinois Senate in January 2020, becoming the 39th person to hold that position. Notable achievements include championing early childhood education , ethics reform , curbing gun violence, protecting civil rights, expanding voter access, environmental protections, renewable energy, and the Senior Citizen Prescription Drug Discount Program. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led remote Senate operations for continuity. Previously, he served as President Pro Tempore and Assistant Democratic Leader . He left his law firm job to focus full-time on leadership and is a founding member of the bipartisan Boat Drink Caucus band.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from St. Ignatius High School; B.A. in English and Economics from Knox College; J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
