Biography
Diego Morales is a Republican politician serving as Indiana's 63rd Secretary of State since 2023. He made history in 2022 as the first Latino and first legal immigrant elected to statewide office in Indiana, defeating Democrat Destiny Wells. As Secretary of State, he oversees statewide elections and business services but does not represent a specific legislative district. Notable achievements include expanding voter ID to mail-in voting, implementing paper audit trails in all 92 counties, enhancing post-election audits, leading efforts for proof-of-citizenship in voter registration, and elevating Indiana to a top 10 state for election integrity; he also launched business success initiatives and issued a cease-and-desist to BlackRock over political influences.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Born February 15, 1979, in Guatemala, Morales immigrated legally to the U.S. in 1999, graduated from Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, Indiana, earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, an MBA from Purdue University, and an International MBA from Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
- Military and Early Career: Became a naturalized U.S. citizen, served in the U.S. Army and Indiana National Guard; worked as a business executive, consultant, and entrepreneur.
- Political Experience: Aide in the Indiana Secretary of State's office and Governor’s office; elected Secretary of State in 2022 as the only America First Secretary of State Coalition winner; announced reelection bid emphasizing election integrity, business-friendly policies, and accountability.
- Honors: Sagamore of the Wabash, Kentucky Colonel, Ambassador of Peace from Guatemala. Resides in Indianapolis with his wife and daughter.
