Biography
Diane Dixon
Diane Brooks Dixon is a Republican member of the California State Assembly representing District 72, which includes Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Seal Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo, and Laguna Beach in Orange County.
Dixon was elected to the State Assembly in 2022 after a narrow loss in 2020. She first ran for the Assembly in 2020, losing by approximately 2,500 votes to Democrat Cottie Petrie-Norris. Following redistricting, she defeated a Democratic challenger by a substantially higher margin in 2022 and won reelection in 2024 with 59.5% of the vote.
Prior to her election to the State Legislature, Dixon spent 40 years in the private sector as a business executive. Her career experience includes owning her own consulting business and holding multiple senior leadership positions at Fortune 300 company Avery Dennison, including director, vice president of corporate communications, senior vice president of communications and corporate affairs, and chief communications officer.
Education and Political Experience
Dixon earned a B.S. in political science from the University of Southern California in 1973.
Local Government Service
She was elected to the Newport Beach City Council in 2014 and served two terms as Mayor. Her tenure as mayor focused on fiscal responsibility and government transparency, delivering budget surpluses, paying down pension liabilities, improving public safety, and completing infrastructure projects on time and within budget.
State Legislative Positions
In the State Assembly, Dixon serves as Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee and the Accountability and Administrative Review Committee. She also serves on the Assembly Committees on Appropriations, Banking and Finance, Business and Professions, Governmental Organization, and Privacy and Consumer Protection, and as an Alternate on the Rules Committee.
Regional and Community Leadership
Dixon served as President of the Association of California Cities-Orange County and as a member of the regional council of the Southern California Association of Governments and the Orange County Council of Governments . She has been an active board member for nearly four decades with philanthropic organizations including United Way Orange County, YMCA, public television, USC Board of Councilors and Alumni Association, educational institutions, child service agencies, and health-related organizations.
