Biography
Senator Derrick Simmons
Derrick T. Simmons is a Democratic state senator representing Senate District 12 in Mississippi, which encompasses Bolivar, Washington, and Coahoma counties. He is a lawyer, former municipal court judge, and adjunct college professor. Simmons is married to CuWanda Flowers Simmons, and they have a son, Derrick Jr. . He is a member of the Greater Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi.
Education
Simmons is a proud product of Greenville Public Schools. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Jackson State University, a Master of Business Administration in finance from Howard Business School, and a Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law.
Political Experience
Simmons returned to the Mississippi Delta in 2005 to pursue public service. In 2008, he co-founded Simmons & Simmons, PLLC, a law firm in Greenville, with the stated mission to represent the voiceless and fight for justice and equality.
He was elected to the Mississippi Senate on March 1, 2011. Currently, he serves as Minority Leader in the Mississippi Senate and holds several committee positions, including Chairman of the Enrolled Bills Committee. He is also a member of the Compilations, Revisions, and Publications Committee; Corrections; Finance; Insurance; Judiciary A; Judiciary B; Labor; and Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks committees.
