Biography
Derell Wilson is the Democratic/Working Families Party representative for Connecticut's 46th House District, serving Norwich. Elected in November 2022 as the first African American State Representative for the district, he was reelected to a second term in November 2024. Notable achievements include serving as Vice Chairman of the Labor & Public Employees Committee, and as a member of the Judiciary and Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committees. He was recently elected Vice Chair of the CT General Assembly’s Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, selected multiple times as one of CT’s 100 Most Influential Blacks, and became a CSG Robert J. Thompson Fellow.
Education and Political Experience
Wilson is an MPA Fellow, Class of 2027, at the University of Connecticut's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His political journey began in 2006 during the Reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, when he marched with NAACP members to Washington, D.C., to advocate for the legislation. In 2018, he was elected chair of the Norwich Democratic Town Committee, serving until 2023. At age 27, he won his first term on the Norwich City Council as an Alderman in 2019, securing a second term in 2021 and helping pass a declaration addressing health disparities. Outside politics, he serves as President of the Eastern Connecticut Board of Approved Football Officials and works as a Building Substitute at the Integrated Day Charter School.
