Biography
Derek C. Stanford is a Democratic member of the Washington State Senate, representing District 1 since 2019. A statistician by profession, he previously served in the Washington House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, including as chair of the House Commerce & Gaming Committee. He was appointed to the Senate in July 2019 to complete the term of Guy Palumbo. Notable current roles include Vice Chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee, and service on the Business, Financial Services, and Trade Committee; Labor and Commerce Committee; chair of the Washington State Caseload Forecast Council; and past membership on the Community Economic Redevelopment Board and Legislative Evaluation and Accountability Program Committee. Outside politics, he runs a small business in analytics solutions and statistical consulting, with prior experience as director of analytics in fraud detection and customer insights, and as a research scientist serving as principal investigator on a DARPA project.
