Biography

Derek Larkin Schmidt, born on January 23, 1968, in Independence, Kansas, is a fifth-generation Kansan currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Kansas's 2nd Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2025, succeeding Jake LaTurner. Prior to his congressional tenure, Schmidt served as the 44th Attorney General of Kansas from 2011 to 2023, making him the second-longest-serving attorney general in the state's history. His career also includes a decade in the Kansas State Senate, where he held positions as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Senate Majority Leader.
