Biography

Derek Kilmer is an American politician who served as the U.S. Representative for Washington's 6th congressional district from 2013 to 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, he was born on January 1, 1974, in Port Angeles, Washington. Raised by two public school teachers, Kilmer developed a strong appreciation for education early in life. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Affairs from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Comparative Social Policy from the University of Oxford.

Before entering politics, Kilmer worked as a business consultant for McKinsey & Company and served as a business retention manager for the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. His political career began in the Washington State House of Representatives, where he served from 2005 to 2007, followed by the Washington State Senate from 2007 to 2012. In 2012, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, succeeding Norm Dicks.

During his tenure in Congress, Kilmer was recognized for his bipartisan efforts and effectiveness. He chaired the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress, leading to over 200 recommendations aimed at improving congressional operations. He also co-founded the Congressional Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, focusing on environmental restoration efforts in the region.

In November 2023, Kilmer announced he would not seek re-election in 2024, concluding his congressional service after six terms.
