Biography
Senator Derek Harvey
Derek J. Harvey is a Democratic state senator representing District 37 in Montana. Born and raised in Butte, Montana, Harvey has deep roots in his community that have shaped his commitment to public service. He is married to Kayla Harvey and currently resides in Butte.
Before entering electoral politics, Harvey built a career as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician with the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department, where he has served for over 15 years. His professional experience in emergency services and community problem-solving informed his decision to pursue public office.
Education
Harvey earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science from the University of Montana-Helena College of Technology, which he completed between 2007 and 2009.
Political Experience
Harvey began his legislative career when he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives in November 2018, representing District 74. He assumed office on January 7, 2019, and served in that role until 2025.
During his tenure in the House, Harvey held the position of Minority Whip from 2021 to 2025, demonstrating his leadership abilities and capacity to navigate complex legislative processes. He also served as Vice Chair of the Business and Labor Committee and held membership on the Energy, Telecommunications, and Federal Relations Committee.
In 2024, Harvey successfully ran for the Montana State Senate, transitioning to represent District 37. He assumed office on January 6, 2025, with a current term ending on January 3, 2029. His campaign focused on pressing issues including property tax reform, aimed at alleviating financial burdens on working-class Montanans while maintaining adequate funding for essential services.
