Biography

Representative DeLena Johnson

DeLena Johnson is a Republican member of the Alaska House of Representatives, representing District 25, which includes Palmer, Butte, Lazy Mountain, and the Walby Lake area.

Johnson grew up in Talkeetna, a small community in Alaska. She graduated from Susitna Valley High School in 1981. She and her husband Steve raised and schooled their five children in Palmer and now have three grandchildren.

In 1984, Johnson started an award-winning property development company specializing in unique Alaskan properties. Prior to her legislative career, she served as president of the Palmer Museum of History, served two terms as Mayor of the City of Palmer, and was elected President of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.

Education

Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Alaska Anchorage and an associate degree in Electronics from Mat-Su College. She also completed a fellowship at the Henry Toll Fellow program through the Energy Horizons Institute in 2022.

Political Experience

Johnson was first elected to the Alaska House of Representatives on November 8, 2016, and has been elected three times to serve in the state legislature. Her committee assignments and leadership roles have included:

  • Current positions: Co-Chair of Finance – Operating Budget, member of the Legislative Ethics Committee, and member of the Judiciary, University, and Commerce and Economic Development finance subcommittees in the 33rd Alaska State Legislature
  • Previous positions: House Minority Whip , member of the Education, Legislative Ethics, Legislative Council, and Rules committees
  • Earlier service: Member of the House Resources, State Affairs, and Energy committees

In November 2025, the Republican caucus voted to make Johnson Minority Leader, succeeding Mia Costello. Additionally, in 2020, Johnson sponsored a successful resolution requesting the United States Secretary of the Treasury to mint $1 coins honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich under the Native American $1 Coin Act.
