Biography
Debbie O'Malley is a Democratic state senator representing District 13 in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. An Albuquerque native whose ancestors have resided in the region for hundreds of years, she has deep roots in the community and has dedicated her career to neighborhood revitalization and public service.
O'Malley and her husband, Michael, both graduates of Valley High School, have been married for 49 years and have two grown daughters and four grandchildren, all residing in the North Valley.
Education and Political Experience
O'Malley's public service career began in the early 1990s through community organizing focused on environmental cleanup in the Sawmill District. In 1998, she founded the Sawmill Community Land Trust, a nonprofit community development corporation, serving as its Executive Director until 2003. The organization's Arbolera de Vida revitalization project became a nationally-acclaimed model for neighborhood development.
Her elected positions include:
- New Mexico State Senator, District 13
- Bernalillo County Commissioner, District 1
- Albuquerque City Councilor, District 2 , serving as both Council President and Vice President during her tenure
- Associate Chief of Staff for Policy, City of Albuquerque
Throughout her career, O'Malley has held leadership roles on numerous boards and commissions, including the Albuquerque Bernalillo Water Authority, Metropolitan Transportation Board, and Middle Rio Grande Council of Governments, where she served as chair. Her legislative priorities have centered on affordable housing, homelessness prevention, and behavioral and mental health support services for families and children.
