Biography

David Sylvester Wilson is an American politician from Alaska and a Republican who represented Wasilla in Alaska Senate District D from 2017 to 2025. Originally from California, he moved to Alaska 19 years ago and became the first African American elected to the Alaska Senate from the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, the eighth African American in the Alaska Legislature, the third Republican among them, and the first Republican senator from outside Anchorage or Fairbanks. Elected at age 35 after serving as a Wasilla city councilman, he chaired the Senate Health & Services Committee and served on committees including Senate Finance subcommittees , Transportation, Public Safety, Labor & Workforce Development Finance, and State Affairs. Notable achievements include the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucus Heritage Award and co-chairing the Alaska Future Caucus.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Degrees in education, psychology, and an MBA with a concentration in health service administration.
  • Professional Experience: Taught in rural Alaska communities, provided technical assistance to community health clinics, worked 11 years in behavioral health with children, families, teens, and adults, specializing in youth and crisis intervention; later directed a domestic violence and sexual assault program.
  • Political Experience: Wasilla City Councilman prior to Senate; elected to Alaska Senate in 2016, defeating Rep. Lynn Gattis in the Republican primary without Alaska Republican Party backing ; sworn in January 2017; served through 2025.
