Biography

Senator David Brock Smith

David Brock Smith is a Republican politician serving in the Oregon State Senate, representing District 1, which encompasses all of Curry County and parts of Coos and Douglas counties in southwest Oregon. He was born on July 23, 1962, and is a third-generation resident of Senate District 1, growing up in Port Orford on the southern Oregon coast.

Before his legislative career, Smith was a businessman in the culinary industry, working in restaurants throughout the Rogue Valley before returning to Port Orford to take over his family's 45-year-old restaurant and lounge. He also served as the former leader of the Port of Port Orford's chamber of commerce.

Smith was appointed to the Oregon State Senate on January 11, 2023, to fill the vacancy created by Dallas Heard's resignation. He currently serves as Deputy Leader in the Senate.

Education

Smith is a graduate of Pacific High School in Port Orford. He attended Southern Oregon Community College and Southern Oregon University .

Political Experience

Smith served in the Oregon House of Representatives for House District 1 from 2017 until his move to the Senate in January 2023. Prior to his legislative service, he held various roles with the Association of Oregon Counties, including positions on their Board of Directors and Legislative Committee, and served as District 4 Chair representing Curry, Coos, Douglas, Josephine, and Jackson counties. He also served on the Port Orford-Langlois School Board for many years.

During his time in the House, Smith held several significant committee positions, including Vice Chair of the House Committee for Energy and Environment, Co Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction, and Vice-Chair of the House Economic Development Committee. He served as Co-Convener of multiple task forces and caucuses, including the Sudden Oak Task Force, Maritime Workforce Development Task Force, Oregon Coast Trail, and served as Co-Chair of both the Oregon Legislative Sportsman's Caucus and Oregon Legislative Wine Caucus.
