Biography
Representative David Morales ** represents **House District 7 in Providence, Rhode Island, covering the Mount Pleasant, Valley, and Elmhurst neighborhoods. First elected in 2020 at age 22, he became one of the youngest state legislators in the U.S. and the youngest Latino to serve in a Rhode Island state legislature. Raised in public housing in Soledad, California, by a single immigrant mother after his parents separated due to his father's addiction, Morales is a community advocate focused on economic, housing, healthcare, and worker justice.
Notable achievements include sponsoring laws banning tip theft, protecting whistleblowers from immigration status threats, extending Rhode Island's winter utility shut-off moratorium to the longest in the U.S., and enabling tenants exposed to lead hazards to escrow rent until repairs are made. He helped secure state budget funding for health insurance for all lower-income children regardless of immigration status, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, public libraries, and education for multilingual learners, special education, and high-poverty districts. Other accomplishments: passing "Cover All Kids" for Medicaid expansion, capping insulin and prescription drug costs, funding lead service line replacements , "Freedom to Read" against book bans, and supporting striking healthcare workers. In 2025, he was elected co-chair of the Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander Caucus. He serves on the House Labor, House Innovation and Technology, and House Municipal Government and Housing Committees. In 2026, Morales is running for Mayor of Providence.
Education and Political Experience
